MAPUSA: Salgaocar Football Club had to wait for the penalty shootout where they got the better of Dempo Sports Club 5-3 in the Charity Football Match organised by GFA played at Duler stadium here on Sunday.

The match ended goalless at the end of regulation time.

In a lacklustre first session, the match was mostly restricted to midfield.

Golden Eagles went close twice in the last quarter of the first session.

A placement by Vieri Colaco from a pass by Saiesh Bagkar went just past the post while Salgaocar's goalkeeper Jason D'Mello came up a brave save to thwart Necio Fernandes in one-on-one situation in which the ball travelled to Aman Govekar whose header was blocked on the goal-line by a defender.

The second session was almost similar to the first with play confined to midfield.

The match came alive only in the 74th minute when Salgaocar's goalkeeper Jason D'Mello lunged to his left to parry substitute Velacio Rodrigues’ cross to safety.

In added time, a teasing cross by Salgaocar's Umang Gaikwad from the left flank saw the overlapping Ribhav Sardesai connecting a bit too late in front of an uguarded goal.

In the very next minute, a fierce shot by Sidharth Kundaikar went just wide of Dempo’s post.

In the ensuing penalty shootout, Salgaocar found the net through Samuel, Sourabh, Sidharth and Umang. Dempo scored through Suraj, Pedro and Ariston Costa.

Chief Guest Shubangi Vaigankar, Chairperson Mapuca Municipal Council, and Guest of Honour Chandrashekhar Benkar,Vice-Chairperson of Mapuca Municipal Council, addressed the gathering and presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up in the presence of GFA acting president Anthony Pango, Babli Mandrekar, Senior Executive member of GFA, and other GFA Executive members.
