The root cause of corruption

Herald Team

The story revolves around Justin (Justin), his spouse Celine (Celine) and their only son Alister (Alister). On the other hand, there is Arnald (Arnald), his son Roy (Effifanio Cabral), who is a police inspector and differently abled daughter Grachel (Grachel Mascarenhas).

After serving as a panch and sarpanch of the village, Justin wins the assembly elections. There’s excitement in the family. Justin’s wife and son, his PA Deseka (Maria Afonso) and the parish priest (Francis) come together and rejoice over the victory.

Katappa (Augustine de Sanguem), who belongs to a particular party, steps in in order to lure the newly elected representative. But the elected representative does not bow down to any pressure tactics and he has moral support from his family members and friends.

Finally the CM (Teotonio Costa) drops by and after noting that Justin is determined to continue in the opposition, blackmails him. With no other option in hand, the MLA bows down and surrenders.

Deseka is in love with Roy, but there’s Alister who is equally attracted to Deseka. The police inspector finally ties the knot with Deseka and she receives all love and support from her father-in-law and sister-in-law.

Justin’s involvement in corruption spreads like wildfire. Under the influence of alcohol, his son is also involved in a major mishap. Police inspector tries to arrest the culprit, but Alister is set free after political interference and Roy is suspended.

Allegations follow after the minister’s involvement with his PA. Then there’s a drift between Roy and Deseka on account of infidelity. What follows next is worth the watch during the second half of the drama.

Pascoal de Chicalim’s tiatr ‘Goenkaranchim Dukham’ has a lot of political issues tackled throughout. Corruption in politics and among the politicians is exposed. How the politicians are hired and dumped, the victimization of the non-corrupt ministers are some of the highlights.

Justin plays the role of the politician and he has handled it with ease. Celine, Alister and Maria extend good support. Arnald is apt as the compassionate father. Francis as a priest delivers comfortably. New entrant on the commercial stage, Grachel Mascarenhas wins hearts of the audience as a differently abled child. Effifanio Cabral is good as the cop. Augustine de Sanguem plays a convincing negative role. Teotonio Costa stands tall as the CM. Pascoal de Chicalim makes a cameo in the second half.

In the comic acts, there are new faces on stage, namely comedian Sera, Afileo and Levon and all three generate laughter with their comical pills. Although their acts appear more of those in ‘zomnivhele fell’, more exposure on stage will take them to greater heights.

In the section of songs, Maria Afonso steps in for the opening song, followed by solos from Victor de Cunha, Levon, Teotonio, Rons and Celine. There are two songs from Pascoal/Maria and Victor/Celine and both the songs stand out. Other songs are by Teotonio, Maria and Grachel and Arnald, Sera, Alister and Augustine. A duo and choral went amiss in the tiatr. New faces among the musicians offstage provided good music, but lacked the required punch.

The stage sets were worked upon by Anthony de Ambaji and Anvil handled the lights.
