Annual menace: Overflowing sewage chambers irk Arlem locals

Herald Team

MARGAO: Recent heavy rains have once again highlighted deficiencies in the sewerage network, particularly in areas like Arlem-Raia and several others. Overflowing sewage chambers have left locals frustrated and road-users at risk of skidding.

This waterlogging issue has also led to the formation of large potholes, creating further difficulties for both residents and commuters. Local residents are increasingly concerned about sewage entering their homes and have urgently called upon authorities to address the issue immediately.

In light of the hardships they are facing, residents have issued a stern warning that they will block the nearby highway if the authorities do not swiftly resolve the problems with the sewerage network and potholes.

Residents have reported that water has been continuously gushing out from a sewage chamber in Arlem for several days, attributing it to heavy rainfall. According to their claims, this marks the third consecutive year they have endured such a situation, leaving them feeling angry and helpless.

“The site where the

water was gushing out from the sewage chambers is a residential area. We fear that the sewage will enter our houses and contaminate our wells too,” said local resident Rosario Colaco.

He also mentioned that a huge pothole near the sewage chamber has caused several accidents in the last few days.

“It is very clear that the concerned authorities are not taking this issue seriously, despite knowing that it recurs annually at this site. Rainwater is mixing with sewage and gushing out from the chambers,” he stated emphatically.

Residents are calling for immediate action to rectify the sewerage system and fix the potholes to ensure the stretch remains safe for motorists.
