Attack on tourists: Cops urge Tourism Dept to cancel licences of two resorts

PANJIM: The Pernem Police have written to the Department of Tourism to cancel the licences of two resorts situated at Dandoswado, Mandrem and at Mardiwada, Morjim following brutal assault on foreign tourists.

In one case, hotel staff Abhishek Verma from Uttarakhand, attempted to rape and brutally assaulted a Dutch woman at the resort where she staying. In the second incident, another hotel staff attacked a Russian woman causing injuries to her.   

Regarding the Mandrem resort, the police have stated in the notice that the resort had no safety apparatus like CCTV cameras for the safety of guests and added that the credentials of the accused, who was employed at the hotel, were not registered with the police, either. It has caused severe repercussions to the tourism and the name of the touristic State. Hence, the police requested the Department of Tourism to cancel the licence of the resort, who had violated all safety norms and even reportedly sublet the resort.

Acting on the basis of a police complaint, the Department of Tourism has issued a show cause notice and asked the resort owner as to why action should not be initiated against him and resort should not be sealed for causing injuries to the woman tourist, who had put up in the resort.

The resort owner has been asked to reply to the show cause notice within seven days. 

The incident occurred on March 31, when the accused brutally assaulted the 29-year-old woman and a local Eurico Dias, who had gone to rescue the tourist.
