Cabbie beaten up by ‘drunk’ tourists at Calangute

CALANGUTE: Following the recent attack and murder of a taxi driver at a, Pernem, yet another cabbie from Saligao, was allegedly assaulted by a group of 11 ‘inebriated’ tourists travelling in two Punjab-registered vehicles on Saturday, at Calangute, while returning home after dropping off a passenger at Baga.

Talking to mediapersons at Calangute Police Station, Sailesh Shetgaonkar said that suddenly a group of tourists in two four-wheelers started abusing him and made insulting gestures on Chogm road. When he stopped to ask them why they were abusing him, the tourists allegedly blocked his car and assaulted him, causing him injuries. 

The incident occurred opposite a petrol pump near Calangute police station at around 3 am. 

In the melee, he managed to grab the ignition keys of one of the vehicles and called the police. The other vehicle with six tourists escaped from the spot. 

Saligao locals gathered at the Calangute police station on Saturday morning demanding that the police register an FIR against the tourists who were allegedly ‘inebriated’.

No offence has been registered, the Calangute Police said, adding that they are investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, former Union Minister Ramakant Khalap has strongly condemned the recent attack and murder of a taxi driver at Dhargalim. 

Khalap expressed deep shock and sadness over this heinous incident, calling it a grave injustice to the local community.

Khalap demanded a speedy and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly. He emphasised that such incidents highlight the broader issues of injustice faced by locals in various spheres of employment, including the taxi trade.

Khalap underscored the importance of ensuring that the benefits of major developments like AYUSH and Mopa Airport accrue to the local population. 

He stated, “It is imperative that the local community is not left behind and that they receive their rightful share of opportunities and benefits from such projects.”

Khalap’s call for action resonates with the need for better protection and support for local workers, ensuring their safety and rightful place in the economic landscape of Goa.
