MARGAO: Heavy rains have once again submerged the National Highway at Arlem-Raia, severely inconveniencing commuters and residents. The persistent flooding has disrupted travel and daily activities in the area, prompting citizens to accuse authorities of repeated failures in addressing the poor drainage in the area over several years.

The recurring scenes of flooding during every monsoon season have become a frustrating reality for residents and commuters alike.

The tragic incident in 2022, where 72-year-old Pedro Antonio Gauncar lost his life drowning in a collapsed storm water drain near Arlem Junction, highlighted the dire consequences of inadequate infrastructure.

Sunday’s downpour caused storm water to enter the premises of Our Lady of Livramento Church, endangering devotees attending Mass. Commuters faced significant challenges navigating submerged drains obscured by floodwaters, further exacerbating the dangers posed by travelling during the deluge. Arlem local Rosario Fernandes criticised authorities for neglecting drainage issues, alleging that choked nullahs at Arlem junction worsen flooding problems during heavy rainfall.
