PANJIM: Even as the cyclone 'Amphan' has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm along South-East India, it is likely to have minimal impact on Goa. The State, however, will receive wind currents.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) declared a cyclone alert for areas across the Bay of Bengal, due to low-pressure area that formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman sea. The weather officials have also warned that cyclone ‘Amphan’ might turn into a “super cyclonic storm”.

The IMD also stated that a very severe storm will likely cross West Bengal - Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Island, in the afternoon/evening of May 20. While Odisha will experience heavy rainfall from today itself, the storm will make landfall on the West Bengal coast likely on May 20.

IMD Goa observatory official Rahul Mohan said the cyclone will have no adverse impact on State weather. "There will be no adverse impact. Heavy winds at a speed of 20-25kmph expected till Tuesday afternoon," he said.

No specific rainfall or fishermen warning has been issued by IMD, which is expecting cloudy skies, one or two light spells of rains in isolated places.

The arrival of South-West monsoon has been delayed over Goa, as the onset itself is expected to be on June 5 over Kerala.
