Dilapidated footbridge poses safety risk for school children, residents

PONDA: With its safety railings collapsing, the footbridge on the main nullah at Mestawada Curti- Ponda now poses a danger to school children and residents who use it.

“The railings collapsed after heavy showers battered the State. The bridge is used as a shortcut by many students to go to various schools in the area while locals use it to go to the panchayat and other areas,” said a villager.

Residents have now written to the Water Resources Department (WRD) seeking renovation and immediate restoration of the railings as water flows over the footbridge everytime there are heavy showers. “The situation is quite precarious,” said villagers.

Locals claim that huge logs and garbage stuck under the footbridge needs to be cleared as it has blocked the smooth flow of water and demanded that the WRD erect the railings and called for a stability audit inspection of  footbridge for the safety of school students and locals.
