Illegal cricket betting racket busted in Porvorim, four arrested

PANJIM: The Porvorim police arrested four persons for allegedly being involved in online illegal cricket betting and seized various equipment worth Rs 1.5 lakh.

According to the Porvorim PI Rahul Parab, information was received late night on December 9, that online illegal cricket betting was going on in a house at Socorro. Accordingly, a team was formed and raid conducted on the house in Kamat Nagar, Socorro.

During the raid, laptops and mobile phones used to accept bets on various cricket leagues, all worth Rs 1.5 lakh, were seized from the premises.

The accused persons have been identified as Tejeshwar Rao, 24, a native of Durg-Chattisgarh, Gagan Kumar Suman, 23, and Karan Pal, 25, both natives of Madhya Pradesh, and Mukesh Kumar Jat, 21, from Rajasthan.

All the accused were arrested under sections 3 and 4 of Goa Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act.

The raiding team was led by Porvorim PI Rahul Parab and consisted of PSIs Sitaram Malik and Sanket Talkar and constables Mahadev Naik, Utkarsh Dessai, Bhikaji Parab, Yogesh Shinde, Siddhesh Naik and Nitesh Gaude.

Further investigation is in progress under the supervision of Porvorim Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Vishwesh Karpe and Superintendent of Police (SP), North, Nidhin Valsan, IPS.
