PANJIM: In a tragic incident, a devotee drowned during immersion of Ganesh idol at Merces, Tiswadi. Pramod Tukaram Naik, 57 from Carmibhat, Merces drowned in the river during Ganesh immersion on Wednesday midnight.
The tragedy occurred when Naik along with family members and others had gone to the rivulet for immersion of Ganesh idol, which was installed and worshipped in his house for one-and-half days.
On getting the information, the fire personnel from Panjim fire station rushed to the spot and started search operations. The search operation was suspended at night as the firemen found it difficult to work in the dark.
Meanwhile, a woman from Karapur, Bichoilm is suspected to have committed suicide by jumping into river off Amona bridge on Thursday afternoon.
On getting the information, the Bicholim fire tender along with rescue team rushed to the spot and launched search operations with a boat but in vain. The search operation will continue on Friday morning, they said.
