PANJIM: The Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd, Malim Jetty, Betim, on Wednesday favoured the use of 150 KVA generators on their vessels, before the High Court of Bombay at Goa.

The Court was hearing two writ petitions filed by Joaquim Reginaldo Mendes and 10 others and another by NGO Goa Foundation, praying to ban LED fishing and bull trawling.

The Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd advocated the use of gensets in view of modern equipment on the vessels.

The petitioners had strongly contended that the DG set used onboard fishing vessels was primarily used for operating LED fishing equipment. But the government had submitted to the court that it was banned by the Goa government by an order dated May 10, 2016. The matter was later adjourned to Thursday.

In February this year, director of fisheries Shamila Monteiro had filed an additional affidavit in the Court stating that DG sets of 60 to 150 KVA capacity were required to be provided on vessels of 15 metres to 23 metres in length as there were the vessels which venture out into the sea beyond 12 nautical miles, beyond the territorial waters for several days at end. She had further stated that vessels which were less than 15 metres long, the use of DG sets was not required on such vessels.
