PANJIM: Soon after the BJP lost power in Karnataka, its Goa unit changed its stance and realised that granting approval to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by Karnataka has posed a threat to the very existence of Mhadei River.
“The latest development, wherein the DPR of Karnataka pertaining to Mhadei River has been approved by the Central Water Commission, has posed a threat to the very existence of this river,” stated the political resolution passed by the BJP State executive committee in its meeting.
The political resolution strongly urged the State government to take all necessary steps to safeguard Goa’s lawful rights and interest over the water of River Mhadei.
This threat was not evident when the BJP was in power in Karnataka, which they lost in the just concluded Assembly elections. The BJP has further realised that “the Mhadei River is the lifeline of the State of Goa” and its resolution reiterates its unflinching commitment and support to the State government in its fight to save River Mhadei.
The Congress has ridiculed the State BJP’s resolution. Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has asked the BJP to stop shedding crocodile tears and to take steps to get the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Kalasa Bandhura withdrawn.
“The splendid victory of Congress party and the worst defeat of BJP in Karnataka, compelled BJP in Goa to come out of deep slumber and realise that BJP Government at the Centre has illegally approved DPR of Kalsa Bhandura Project of Karnataka,” said Alemao.
