PANJIM: The ongoing Smart City works took the third life of a citizen this time at Ribandar.
Social worker Emidio Monteiro from Sant Estevam, fell into a pothole from his two-wheeler at Ribandar and injured his head with the impact. He was shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim where he passed away on Saturday.
The accident had occurred at around 7 pm on November 7 when Monteiro was returning on his two-wheeler. On reaching Ribandar where the road is in bad shape, he fell from the two-wheeler and sustained serious head injuries.
Some locals contacted his family and he was rushed to the primary health centre at Betki and then shifted to the GMC, Bambolim, where he also underwent neuro surgery. After battling for 10 days, Monteiro died early Saturday morning.
Social activist Adv Aires Rodrigues said “Emidio Monteiro succumbed to the grievous injuries suffered in an accident last week at Ribandar where the road is a death trap due to the negligence of the Smart City authorities.Will the authorities get their act together to save precious lives from further being lost?”
Wilson D’Souza from Ribandar said, “Monteiro’s family should file a case and sue the Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd for negligence. It was not an accident but a murder by the Smart City. Ribandar road is in bad shape and many accidents have occurred there. The family should fight the case and get justice for Monteiro.”
Activist Mariano Ferrao said, “I along with my wife was returning home when I saw a two-wheeler fallen on the road opposite Ribandar police outpost. I helped Monteiro and contacted his family. Everyday two to three accidents are taking place mostly two-wheeler riders at Ribandar. The road has become a death trap and people are using this road risking their lives.”
