Patients suffer as Ponda Sub-District Hospital fails to fill surgeon’s post for 9 months

PONDA: The Ponda Sub District Hospital has been grappling with the absence of a surgeon for nine months, causing distress among patients who are now forced to seek surgeries at private hospitals or travel all the way to Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim. The Health Department’s failure to fill the vacant surgeon position, suspended since March, has triggered concerns and demands for immediate attention.

The suspended surgeon, responsible for various operations for thyroid, hernia, appendix, breast lumps, and skin grafting on diabetic patients’ feet, left a void that remains unfilled. Needy patients, who previously benefited from surgeries at the Sub District Hospital, now face financial burdens, borrowing money to afford operations at private hospitals or GMC.

Residents of Ponda are raising their voices, urging the government to address the critical situation at the hospital. The absence of a surgeon has not only disrupted healthcare services but also inconvenienced patients, particularly those in remote areas who struggle to reach Bambolim to seek care at GMC, the only alternative for surgeries.

Social activist Viraj Sapre expressed concern over the prolonged absence of a surgeon, emphasising the impact on Ponda residents, especially the poor and needy who depend on the Sub District Hospital for free treatment. He urged the government to swiftly provide a surgeon to alleviate the suffering of patients.

In response to inquiries, Dr Jayshree Madkaikar, Medical Superintendent of Ponda Sub District Hospital, stated that no other surgeon has been transferred to the hospital since the suspension of the previous doctor. Reminders have been sent to the Health Department, and the hospital is hopeful of a resolution soon.
