Sandbars along dredged River Sal stretches prompt call for review of work

Concerns about the dredging of River Sal, which was completed approximately a year ago, were raised on Monday by Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira.

Trawler operators had complained about the unanticipated reappearance of sandbars. He stated that an investigation into the contractor's work was necessary.

Sequeira stated that since it is extremely unlikely for sandbars to form within a year, they need to examine whether the dredging had been done correctly after learning that the contractor had dumped the extracted sand on the riverbanks.

I'm shocked to learn that sandbars have already formed in the river, which was supposed to be dredged last year from the Khare band all the way up to Betul. I have to check to see if the dredging was completed correctly

Trawler owners raised the issue when they reported that even with the dredging, they were still having trouble getting to the sea because of sandbars. They emphasized that a consultant has been hired to prepare a feasibility report and asked that the training wall project be expedited. Sequeira promised to investigate the situation.

He stated that six units have been sealed and guidelines have been issued for compliance regarding the polluting industries in Cuncolim. Those who do not follow these regulations will not be permitted to operate. The units have to furnish a bank guarantee in addition to heavy fines.
According to him, the area's residents are relieved that the offensive smells have subsided as a result of the pollution control board's enforcement of rules against noncompliant units.
