Sessions Court sentences 2 accused for life imprisonment for murder

The accused have been sentenced in the 2018 murder case of a Candolim restaurant owner

MAPUSA: The Sessions Court Mapusa has sentenced both accused persons involved in the murder case of restaurant owner Vishwajeet Singh, to life imprisonment.

The case dates back to August 2018 when Vishwajeet Singh had lodged a complaint on August 7, 2018 against one of his employees  Umesh Lamani of Candolim for stealing his motorcycle. Upset over the complaint the accused person along with another accused person Daya Shankar Sahu native of Madhya Pradesh  had stabbed the victim to death using a sharp knife and sword during the midnight hours at the parking area of Singh’s apartment at Candolim.

 

The accused persons were arrested from Karnataka by then Calangute Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi and the case was investigated thoroughly which included recovery of weapons of assault, identification of witnesses and evidence and seizure of valuable CCTV footages and finally a chargesheet was filed in the same year itself.

The bail applications of the accused persons were rejected many times during the trial. The court examined 42 witnesses and digital evidence.

Further after 6 years of trial and examination of all witnesses, CCTV and scientific evidence the Sessions Court announced life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 for both accused persons for committing murder under section 302 of IPC and 3 years imprisonment for offences under Section 5 read with Section 27 of Arms Act.

The investigation team consisted of DySP Jivba Dalvi (then Police Inspector of Calangute Police Station), PSI Sitaram Malik, PSI Mahesh Naik, ASI Subhash Malvankar and other staff.

 

The prosecution of the case was conducted by Public Prosecutors Anuradha Talaulikar, Jennifer Santamaria and Roy D’Souza.

The judgement was pronounced by Hon’ble District Judge Sharmila Patil.
