Tarred in June, gone in July: New roads riddled with potholes and loose gravel

PONDA: The incessant rainfall has severely damaged newly tarred roads across Ponda Taluka, prompting locals to question if taxpayers’ money was being put to effective use. Many roads, tarred as recently as June, have been washed away in multiple places, rendering the investment futile.

The deteriorating road conditions pose significant risks to bikers, with exposed gravel making certain stretches hazardous. Loss of control over vehicles on these gravel-covered roads increases the risk of accidents, especially with heavy vehicles.

Locals have criticized authorities for initiating road works in late May and June, a period when tarred surfaces don't receive adequate sunlight to properly dry. This rushed approach has led to visible damage, such as potholes at Ponda Bus stand and damaged sections at Donkhamb along the Durbhat-Kavlem road.

Naresh Naik, a local, emphasised the need for roads to be tarred at least two months before the monsoon season. “Proper drying and settling of the tarred surfaces are essential to withstand heavy rains and vehicular traffic effectively,” he said.
