The city is caving in, filling roads with rubble fails and will fail

PANJIM: The State’s capital city continued to bear the brunt of heavy showers on Thursday as incidents of roads caving in were reported with the authorities trying to stabilise them by filling rubble but to their misfortune these road stretches too got washed away at a few places following incessant rains.

The Goa State Development Agency (GSUDA), which is executing the first Smart road in Panjim through a contractor, had too expressed its apprehension about the durability of the roads. In a letter to Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL), the GSUDA has focused on the status of works and the probable impact on works that were underway.

Bagkiya Construction Pvt Ltd, which is executing the work of developing smart roads on behalf of GSUDA is supposed to have completed 60 per cent of the work before monsoon as the contractor was asked to undertake works related to the G20 Summit.

1. In the process the road from Caculo Mall upto the culvert near Thomas Garage, has become unmotorable, especially for two-wheeler riders, who had to wade through the pool of water. Also the road stretch from St Inez Junction upto Hotel Sheetal and further up to near the Fire Station junction has been temporarily asphalted, with the roads showing signs of caving in at few places.

The civil works undertaken by Bagkiya Construction Private Limited include the reconstruction of road pavement crust (rigid pavement), stormwater drain, utility crossings chambers, footpath and landscape works, and road furniture while services include water supply lines, sewage lines, electrical and gas lines. 

GEETA BAKERY

The first major incident of roads caving in was reported near Geeta Bakery where a 50-metre stretch was affected while an internal road at Ribandar was also settled.

PANJIM MUNICIPAL MARKET& MADHUBAN CIRCLE

On Monday, at two places on the same stretch, one road near the Panjim municipal market, the other near the Madhuban Circle at St Inez gave in posing risk to motorists.

Several roads in the capital city were water-logged. Water even entered into the shops and houses after the State experienced heavy showers on Tuesday.

18th June Road and the M G Road

The 18th June Road and the M G Road near Don Bosco School were waterlogged and water entered into some of the shops situated along the 18th June Road. Water logging was also reported at EDC Patto Plaza, along the road stretch from Institute Menezes Braganza (IMB) up to police headquarters and near Urban Health Centre. Water accumulated even at the entrance of the Corporation of the City of Panaji building on June 27.

As part of Smart City Mission/AMRUT schemes, various sewerage works such as laying of HDPE pipelines by High-Density Polyethylene HDD method, manhole construction, cross connections, collection chambers, etc, have been executed in various parts of the capital city.

Fontainhas, Mala, Rua de Qurem Road, Bhatulem, Central Panjim

In the areas of Fontainhas, Mala, Rua de Qurem Road, Bhatulem, Central Panjim (MG Road and branch network) and the area around the Directorate of Agriculture, Tonca the work has been executed by the PWD, Division XXVII, under AMRUT Mission.

The road from Vivanta Junction to Tonca Bridge and further upto Goa International Hotel Junction,

This work has been executed by GSUDA under Smart City Mission.

A substantial portion of road surfaces in the said stretches has been temporarily laid with a bitumen layer to make the roads motorable. Further, as part of their ongoing road project, GSUDA has laid new electrical lines and water supply lines in the abovementioned stretches.
