PANJIM: Goa has seen a steady rise in crime rate for some time. Many of the accused in these cases are migrants. Due to this Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered for 100% tenant verification. In this edition of Street Voices, we asked people if tenant verification will reduce crimes in Goa or is there a need for close watch on people escaping through the railway network?
Even the tourists that are coming into Goa, we do not know for what they are coming and if there are any cases against them. So being a tourist destination where thousands of tourists come during the season and even during the off season, it is mandatory that a police check should be done. Will the CM’s declaration that those not declaring tenants will be fined Rs 10,000 will it be implemented?
Tenant verification is very important in Goa as of today because of a number of cases of theft, number of cases of molestation and rapes that are happening. All these are on a rapid rise. Police come to the houses and check, but that is not enough. One is not able to make out the person’s antecedents. Some people may not register their tenants. They may keep tenants and keep quiet. Some may not be aware that police verification has to be done. Robbers can come from anywhere.
There is need to strengthen patrolling at railway stations, bus stops and entry points. Robbers can even come well dressed, suited and booted or in disguise. I congratulate the government for imposing the Rs 10,000 fine on landlords who do not register their tenants. I congratulate the government on this.
No only theft cases, but even crimes have increased in Goa. We have to keep on who comes to Goa and who goes. Records have to be maintained of such persons.
