In a unanimous decision reflecting a prearranged understanding among the ruling group, Councillor Nutan Bicholkar has been elected unopposed as the new chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC). Bicholkar emerged as the sole nominee for the position during the nomination filing period, which concluded on Thursday.
The leadership transition comes in the wake of Chairperson Priya Mishal completing her term and subsequently tendering her resignation on February 8. Her resignation letter was officially accepted by the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) on February 14.
As part of a mutual agreement among the councillors within the ruling group, the five-year term has been strategically divided among them. This cooperative strategy ensures a smooth transition of leadership while maintaining stability within the council.
Councillor Nutan Bicholkar formally submitted her nomination to MMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar. The event was witnessed by Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua D'Souza, along with fellow councillors. The nomination filing window was open until 12 noon on Thursday, but Bicholkar emerged as the lone contender for the chairperson's post.
