GOA’S MANKURAD MANGO GETS GI TAG

Herald Team

Exciting news for Goa's agricultural and culinary heritage, as two iconic products have recently been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai. The All Goa Mango Growers Association, Panaji, successfully filed the application for the famous Mankurad Mango, known by various names such as malcorada, cardozo mankurad, corado, and Goa mankur. The name "mankurad" originates from Konkani, evolving from the Portuguese term "malcorada," which translates to 'poor coloured'.

Similarly, the All Goa Baker's & Confectioners Association, Colva, played a vital role in securing the GI tag for the beloved Goan dessert, Bebinca, often referred to as the "queen of Goan desserts."

With these achievements, Goa continues to showcase its rich cultural heritage and diverse culinary offerings to the world. Additionally, the GI tagging process is also underway for two more Goan products: the unique Seven Ridge Okra and the flavorful Agasaim Brinjal.

It is noteworthy that these are not the only products to receive the GI tag in recent times. The GI tag was also granted to five other products from different regions of India, further emphasizing the country's diverse and vibrant cultural traditions. Among these are the metal crafts 'Jalesar Dhatu Shilp,' 'Udaipur Koftgari Metal Craft,' 'Bikaner Kashidakari Craft,' and 'Jodhpur Bandhej Craft,' as well as the artistic 'Bikaner Usta Kala Craft.'

The GI tag is a recognition of the uniqueness and quality of these products, ensuring that their origin is protected and consumers can identify genuine, traditional items. This accomplishment not only boosts local economies and promotes traditional artisans and growers but also fosters a sense of pride among the communities associated with these products.

As Goa's Mankurad Mango and Bebinca dessert join the esteemed list of GI-tagged products, they are set to gain increased prominence both within India and on the global stage, enticing enthusiasts with their authentic flavours and historical significance.
