Herald Team

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for Goa, signaling the imminent threat of heavy rainfall inundating the coastal region within the next 24 hours. This alert comes as a precautionary measure, warning residents and authorities to prepare for potentially disruptive weather conditions.

IMD's latest nowcast weather warning paints a picture of moderate to heavy rainfall, coupled with strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts peaking at 60 kmph. The forecast highlights the likelihood of significant downpours that could impact normal life and infrastructure in the region.

Observers noted the presence of dense clouds in the morning hours hovering over several talukas, including Pernem, Tiswadi, Bardez, Bicholim, and Sattari, all nestled within the North Goa district. Additionally, IMD forecasts further cloud cover approaching from the Arabian Sea, with indications that more talukas may fall under the influence of the inclement weather, moving predominantly in the north-eastern direction.

In response to the impending weather conditions, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has swung into action, activating control centers in both the North and South Goa districts. With extremely heavy rains anticipated, SDMA urged the public to exercise caution, advising against venturing into waterlogged or flood-prone areas to minimize risks to life and property.

Residents and tourists are urged to stay updated on official advisories and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety amidst the looming weather threat.
