Thursday witnessed a tumultuous and intense debate surrounding the persistent and contentious issue of Formalin contamination. Opposition MLAs took centre stage, bringing to the house's attention the alarming increase in Formalin-related concerns across the State, particularly concerning its presence in fish. They voiced their concerns over the unchecked entry of Formalin-infected fish into the State, highlighting a lack of effective border controls.
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas raised questions about the inconsistencies observed in the testing of Formalin in fish at checkpoints. He emphasized the need for the establishment of FDA Lab Testing facilities at all checkpoints to ensure thorough fish testing. In response, Health Minister of Goa Vishwajit Rane asserted the government's dedication to addressing the escalating cancer cases associated with Formalin exposure. He reassured the assembly that they closely monitor the situation and receive daily reports from the Quality Council of India (QCI) regarding Formalin Fish Testing. Rane further asserted that every incoming truck is subjected to thorough scrutiny before entering the state.
Amidst the heated exchanges, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai criticized the government's lack of a permanent and effective solution to the Formalin issue. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to tackle the problem at its root.
