Curtorim Gymkhana crowned champions

RAIA: Curtorim Gymkhana defeated Santa Cruz Society of Poitomado, Cuncolim, 3-0 via a tie-breaker to emerge as champions of the Gold Silver Rolling Inter-Village Football Tournament, organised by Navelim Sporting Club and played at Rosary Church Ground, Navelim, on Wednesday.

Both teams played attacking football, entertaining more than 5,000 spectators who had gathered to watch. Daulat Dessai and Vayne Pires of Santa Cruz Society, along with Rhay Dias and Anselm Fernandes of Curtorim Gymkhana, missed scoring opportunities during regular time.

In the ensuing tie-breaker, Fredy Hilario, Rhay Dias and Gilbert Fernandes successfully found the target for Curtorim Gymkhana, while Santa Cruz Society failed to convert any of their chances.

The winners, Curtorim Gymkhana, walked away with Rs 60,000 and a trophy, while Santa Cruz Poitomado, Cuncolim, had to settle for Rs 40,000 and a trophy. Former Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro was the chief guest and distributed the prizes in the presence of Gabriel Coutinho, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim; Caetano Fernandes, GFA President; Avertano Furtado, former minister and footballer from Navelim; Fr Dylon Da Costa, Assistant Parish Priest of Navelim Church; Edwin Cipru Cardozo, ZP member; Anthony Pango, GFA senior vice-president; Schubert Furtado, Patwin Fizardo, Cosme Oliveira, Anthony Fernandes and Andrew Ferrao (executive members of the GFA), along with other dignitaries and club officials. Aluizio Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
