Dempo clinch Charity Match trophy

MAPUSA: Dempo Sports Club registered an impressive 3-0 win over Sporting Clube de Goa in the Charity Match organised by GFA, held at Duler stadium, here, on Sunday.

It was a slow start from both the teams with number of changes in their Starting XI.

Flaming Oranje were the first to have an attempt at the rival goal came in the 10th minute, when Rohan Rodrigues stinging free-kick was paired to safety by Dempo's custodian Antonio Da Silva, while at the other end Arnold Oliveira's deadly cross at the Sporting goal was cleared by defender Alton Vaz.

Golden Eagles finally struck in the 22nd minute where Aaron Baretto drilled a rasping 25-yard right footer which crashed into the far corner of the goal leaving Sporting goalkeeper Bhaskar Jalmi rooted to the ground to give his side the lead.

Dempo had two more chances to further increase their lead but Laximanrao Rane’s hot blooded shot from close was blocked by Sporting's custodian and Saiesh Bagkar’s header missed the target narrowly.

However, in the 42nd minute, Saiesh Bagkar this time made no mistake as he slammed the ball into the back of the nylons from just outside the 6-yard box to make it 2-0.

On resumption of play, Dempo made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute with Pratik Naik heading the ball home off Arnold Oliveira's corner.

At the start of the match GFA's President Dr Caitano Fernandes and GFA's Executive Committee members escorted Priya Mishal –President MMC for the players and match officials introduction.

The Charity Match collection was handed by Dr. Chandrakant Shetye- MLA Bicholim Constituency to Ritina Pereira (former Women's International), Kalidas Dessai (former Referee) and wife of late Joe Colaco (former National footballer).

Dempo SC were awarded the winner’s trophy while Sporting Clube de Goa had to be content with the runners-up trophy.
