Sanquelim Govt College, SS Dempo College to battle for glory in final

PANJIM: Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sanquelim, achieved win over Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim, 2-1 in the semi-final to book final berth in the Goa University Inter Collegiate Football Men Championship played at Taleigao Plaetau, on Thursday.

The match was enthralling, as both teams demonstrated a strong resolve to advance into the final. The initial half showcased remarkable offensive and defensive maneuvers from both sides, accompanied by several missed chances. The turning point for Sanquelim Government College came in the 45th minute when a pass from Rosary College defender Edwin Kalsolkar intended for the goalkeeper was mishandled, resulting in an own goal.

As the second half began, Rosary College responded vigorously, equalising in the 56th minute through a goal by Garrison Fernandes, who had just been substituted into the game. The intensity of the match escalated, with Rosary College launching multiple attacks. However, in the 63rd minute, Government College reclaimed the lead with a direct free kick from the captain Mohammed Saif that successfully evaded both the defensive wall and the goalkeeper, ultimately sealed the team’s win.

In the second semi-final, S S Dempo College of Commerce and Economics, Cujira, triumphed over the CES College of Arts and Commerce, Cuncolim, 1-0.

The match was characterised by high intensity, with both teams demonstrating considerable effort in their quest to reach the final. The first half concluded without any goals, despite the CES College appearing to dominate in the initial minutes.

As the second half commenced, both teams intensified their efforts, showcasing their skills on the field. Ultimately, it was S S Dempo College who secured the all-important goal with a remarkable shot into the net by Swavel Furtado in the 63rd minute.

Government College, Sanquelim, will now face S S Dempo College, Cujira, on October 7, at SAG’s Athletic Stadium, Bambolim, at 2 pm.

Earlier in the quarter-finals, Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim, achieved a resounding win over Government College of Commerce and Economics, Borda, 10-0.

In the second quarter-final, Dempo Charities Trust’s Srinivassa Sinai Dempo College of Commerce and Economics, Cujira, Bambolim, triumphed over MES Vasant Joshi College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar, 5-0.

At Rosary Church ground, CES’s College of Arts and Commerce, Cuncolim, defeated Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao, 5-1. In the second quarter-final, the Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sanquelim, triumphed over VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Margao, 3-1.
