Sporting Clube eves reclaim title

PANJIM: Karuna Kankonkar netted the winner as Sporting Clube de Goa Eves defeated Goa Hockey Promoters 1-0 in the final to lift the Goans Hockey Women league title, which was organized by Goans Hockey, outside Fatorda Stadium, recently.
The league which is now in its fourth edition was previously won by the Sporting Clube women in the second season.
The Sporting Goan stick wizards qualified for the final after topping the North zone starting with a convincing 2-0 win over last year’s winners San Antonio Warriors, with goals from Deepika Gauns and Karuna Kankonkar.
In their second match, they overcame Pink Panthers with a similar score line. Andrea Sequeira and Sybyl Fernandes hit the back of the net for the Flaming Oranje Ladies.
In the other game San Antonio ran out 5-0 winners over Pink Panther. Dakshita Naik, Kurtika Shirodkar (2), Stiffy Fernandes, Rakey Naik did the damage.
Sporting Goa topped the North group with 6 points, followed by San Antonio with 3 and Pink Panthers finished last with 0 points.
In the South, Goa Hockey Promoters defeated Navelim Hockey Club by a solitary goal courtesy of a fine strike from Liona Fernandes to make their way into the final.
Sporting Goa received the winner’s trophy at the hands of Chief Guest Cynthia D’souza, the former DSYA TSO of Bardez Taluka.
