PANJIM: Dakshinayan Abhiyan has condemned the attempt to inject communal poison into the Goan society and polity over the election of Abdul Karim Naik as sarpanch of Korgao village of Pernem taluka.

Dakshinayan Abhiyan member Prashant Naik said, “Abdul Karim Naik is a two-time elected panchayat member of the Korgao panchayat and is entitled to be the sarpanch being a citizen of India and a voter of Korgao village. Besides Karim Naik is a resident of the place from the time of the Kadamba rule. He is a resident of Korgao at least since the liberation of Goa.”

The Abhiyan has asserted that it is the right of Abdul to contest the election of the sarpanch and was elected by majority panchayat members. Therefore the entire movement by unscrupulous elements was to create an atmosphere of fear in the minds of the panchayat members so that a no-confidence notice is tabled against him and he is voted out. “It is indeed extremely sad that communal elements are having a free run in their endeavour of causing disturbance in panchayat politics,” stated Naik of Dakshinayan Abhiyan.

The entire movement against Karim Naik is based upon a fact that he happens to be a Muslim and that his religion is used to target him and the community. It is a clear attempt to divide the society on communal lines. Dakshinayan Abhiyan said that it was shocked that the government was silent and had done nothing over the issue.

The entire movement against Karim Naik was clearly to disturb the peace and create an atmosphere of mistrust. It is only imperative that the Goa Police acts fast to deal with the menace so that this disturbance that had been started in the northern tip of Goa does not travel to other parts, Naik said.
