An age-old practice praying the rosary at the ward crosses, chapels, at home in the month of October is adorable and a fruitful tradition that bring the faithful together and blessed unknowingly, with the 15 promises revealed to St Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche.

In the 12th century, the Albigenses heresy was widespread in Europe, especially in southern France and Italy. The Albigenses denied the mystery of the Incarnation, rejected Church sacraments and condoned many secular activities considered evil by the Catholic faith.

Among the efforts by the Church to combat this heresy was the organisation of the mendicant orders, including one led by St Dominic. The Dominicans, as they became known, tried to reverse the vile teachings of the Albigenses by roaming the countryside preaching against the heresy, trying to influence those who had fallen away, to come back into the Church.

Tradition has it that St Dominic’s efforts were most effective following a visit from the Blessed Virgin Mary in the year 1214. Neither Dominic nor his order ever made this claim. This legend spread from an alleged dream of Blessed Alan de la Roche in the 15th century, more than 250 years after the death of St. Dominic. De la Roche was a respected writer and theologian of his time (c. 1428-1478) and instrumental in spreading the Rosary devotion throughout the Western Church.

In his dream, the Blessed Virgin gave St Dominic the Rosary and instructed the saint to preach the Rosary as part of his effort to thwart heresy.

According to Blessed Alan de la Roche, the Blessed Virgin Mary said to St Dominic, “If you want to reach these hardened souls and win them over to God, preach my Psalter.” The Psalter refers to the Angelic Prayer, the Hail Mary. Our Lady also revealed to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche 15 benefits for those who devoutly pray the Rosary.

1. Those who faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.

2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.

3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armour against hell. It will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.

4. The recitation of the Rosary will cause virtue and good works to flourish. It will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God. It will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.

6. Those who recite my Rosary devoutly, applying themselves to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. In His justice, God will not chastise them; nor shall they perish by an unprovided death, i.e., be unprepared for heaven. Sinners shall convert. The just shall persevere in grace and become worthy of eternal life.

7. Those who have a true devotion to the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.

8. Those who faithfully recite the Rosary shall have, during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plenitude of His graces. At the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.
