After Portugal, most Goans shift loyalty to Spain in Euro 24

Root for Portugal’s Iberian neighbour, saying Spain has the perfect recipe for success

PANJIM: Portugal are no longer in Euro 24, leaving the football fans in Goa down. As the tournament reaches its business end, fans are now wondering as to who they should follow. Fans in Goa have now shifted their loyalty to the other teams left in the tournament. Many of the fans were more than willing to disclose their opinion.

Former India goalkeeper Brahmanand Sankhwalkar felt that Netherlands was a team that looked good. He said, “They are very aggressive and are very strong with the ball when they are on the attack. I also think it is time, they get lucky as they have been missing titles over the years.”

But support for Portugal’s Iberian neighbour Spain seems to be growing.

Kaizer Joao from Merces felt that Spain was the team that deserved to win at this point, with most of their players stepping up and dropping a masterclass whether be it Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Fabian Ruiz or Dani Olmo. He said, “The entire team plays as a unit and it will be great to see them lifting the Euros this year”.

Another to pick Spain was Shivam Sangodkar, a lecturer from Mollem, who said, “Spain is my top pick to win the Euros this year. Their impressive team dynamics, coupled with the explosive talent of players like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, make them a formidable force. While the loss of Carvajal and Pedri will be felt, Spain’s bench strength and strategic prowess will help them adapt. If they can neutralise the threat of players like Mbappé, their path to the finals looks bright. Spain has the perfect recipe for success. They’re my clear favourites to lift the trophy!”

Spain certainly seemed to be a favourite amongst Goans. Suraj Subhash, a physiotherapist from Ponda, said, “Spain has always had a great style of play which makes them a treat to watch. So far they have beaten quality opponents like the defending champions Italy and a strong and experienced German side. France would be a tough opponent.”

England had its supporters too. Belicia Simoes, a student from Siolim, said that after hosts Germany suffered defeat at the hands of Spain, he was now supporting England. “I am now supporting England to win Euro 2024 with a talented squad and a strong track record, I believe this is their time to shine. Leading the line are Harry Kane, a prolific striker and captain known for his finishing and leadership, and Bukayo Saka, a speedy winger. This team brings in exceptional talent impressing fans with their skills,” Simoes said.

However, Spain edged ahead again as Liam Vas, a law student from Margao, said, “Spain boast of a young, dynamic and hardworking squad, complemented by a tactically sound coach who can maximise their potential and navigate the challenges ahead. Additionally, Spain has demonstrated their capability for late comebacks, as shown in their last match against Germany.”

In a tournament that has been very competitive it remains to be seen if these fans’ hopes become true. Time will tell.
