MARGAO: A team from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) recently inspected the Assolna riverfront to assess encroachments along the stretch from Colleawaddo to the riverbank. The findings from this survey are expected to be compiled into a report and submitted within a month.

Officials from the panchayat explained that the inspection was initiated following complaints and allegations from villagers about illegal encroachments by restaurants along River Sal. During the survey, the GCZMA team demarcated the river’s original boundaries, offering a clearer perspective on the extent of encroachment.

Against the suspicion over bar and restaurant structures along the surveyed stretch allegedly being extended into the river, emphasis will be on the data collected during the inspection by GCZMA, which would guide further action, once the report is finalised. This report is expected to be tabled at the gram sabha for discussions on subsequent steps.

It was also stated that notices were issued to the owners of restaurants, dance floors, and other establishments operating along the riverfront. Additionally, the panchayat arranged boats to facilitate the GCZMA officials’ inspection.

The aim of the inspection was to probe complaints over riverfront encroachments and preserve the ecology and integrity of the Assolna waterfront.
