CBI arrests Barkat Ali who was allegedly involved in 2011 Balli riots case

Ali was deported from Saudi Arabia and handed over to CBI in New Delhi on Friday

 PANJIM: The Central Bureau of Investigations has arrested Barkat Ali who was allegedly involved in 2011 Balli riots case. He had been absconding for last eight years.

Barkat Ali who was allegedly involved in the Balli riots, Goa case which occured in 2011, was hiding in Saudi Arabia and absconding for the last eight years.

After his arrest Ali has been to Judicial custody.

He was deported by Saudi Arabia to India and handed over to the CBI

Two tribal youth were burnt to death, in the riots

Ali was  produced before a district court in South Goa

The Goa govt had transferred cases pertaining to the riots in Balli to the CBI

The 2011 Balli riots followed an agitation led by the United Tribal Association Alliance (UTAA) which turned violent

 The Balli protest, organised by UTAA and supported by the opposition party at the time, was led by figures such as UTAA president Prakash Shanker Velip, Minister Govind Gawde, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, ST Corporation Chairman Meng Gaonkar, among others.

Key demands included political reservation for tribals in the Legislative Assembly, notification of scheduled areas, formation of a Tribal Advisory Council, and addressing backlog vacancies.
