PANJIM: PANJM: A centuries-old well in Taleigao has vanished from the current survey plan of the Directorate of Settlement and Land Records. It is estimated that the well may be around 350 years old. The survey plan issued by the department in 2019 showed the well’s existence, but mysteriously the well had disappeared in the current survey plan.

The well which was shown on the Survey Plan of 2019 is located at SurveyNumber 103/6 at Barbhat, Taleigao. But when villagers got hold of the present survey plan, to their utter shock they found that it had disappeared from the current survey plan. Villagers suspect that this has been done in view of the 300 apartment project which is proposed in the area.

Village Elders can recall that the well existed at least from the Portuguese regime onward. The well is crucial to the entire Barbhat area since it is the only source of water to the ward, which receives only 2 hours water supply per day. Villagers fear that there is a devious plan to fill the well if the project comes up in the area.

Villager Yogesh Kandolkar told O Heraldo, “This well has been existing from the Portuguese regime. It must be between 300 to 350 years old.  About three to four days back I went to get the plan. But to my shock the well is not seen on the plan. All the people of this area flock to the well, when there is shortage of water. It was on the plan till the year 2020. There is a massive 500 to 600 apartment blocks coming from down upto this place, so all our old well are not shown on the plan.”

I have been staying there for the last 40 years. “This well was there when my father was alive. It is there from the Portuguese era. They should not fill this well. From where will we get water, when there is shortage?
Suryakant Kankonkar, Senior Citizen
The well is very useful especially when we don’t have water. “We get piped water only from 6 am to 8am. What will we do if this well if filled? We will not allow it to be filled. We clean the well every year.”
Aarti Kankonkar, a housewife

Vidhya, another housewife disclosed, “For the past three months we are not getting proper water supply. We are supposed to get water for two hours by the water stops at 7.30am. We get water only for one hour. There is no pressure for the water. It takes 5 minutes to fill one bucket.”
