The rains that drenched the State somewhere in the last week of September has destroyed the stand crops of farmers in Aldona. Initially the rain brought pain to the farmers as the incessant downpour had inundated fields and destroyed them.
The ripe and ready to harvest rice crop fell down with the rain and was completely damaged, reducing the poor farmers to tears. Those who had Krishi cards were compensated while others were not. The Agriculture Department officials expressed helplessness as they weren't in a position to compensate those farmers without Krishi cards as per government rules. Very often farmers cultivate land on lease and they can't claim compensation as they are not the deemed owners of the land and they don't possess krishi cards either. Most of the farmers from the economically backward society and the produce they get from the land is often the only source of income for their families.
It would be prudent if the government looks at the farmers sympathetically and reaches out to them in times of crisis irrespective of whether they have krishi cards or not.
