MARGAO: A large group of residents from Fatorda, representing various faiths, gathered in protest against Subhash Velingkar's controversial remarks on Goycho Saib (St Francis Xavier). Following the demonstration, the protesters lodged a formal complaint with the Fatorda Police, demanding Velingkar's arrest for his comments, which they said had deeply offended their religious sentiments.
Simultaneously, the village panchayats of Rachol, Camorlim, and Loutolim filed a joint complaint at the Maina-Curtorim police station, emphasising that Velingkar's remarks had hurt the sentiments of their communities. They called for greater respect toward cultural and religious figures, echoing the widespread sentiment across the State.
The protest in Fatorda commenced with a prayer service at the St Francis Xavier Chapel near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda junction, where devotees prayed for peace, unity and respect among Goans. Afterward, the group marched to the Fatorda police station, expressing their solidarity and demanding action.
Jose Gomes, a resident of Agalli-Borda, explained that the protest was organised in direct response to Velingkar's remarks. He emphasised the need for the community to resist actions and statements that disturb social harmony, saying, "We have tolerated much before, but it’s high time we protest against attempts to disrupt the harmony among Goans."
Similarly, Basilio Fernandes, Sarpanch of Camorlim village in Salcete, voiced frustration over individuals like Velingkar creating unnecessary tensions, and the government's failure to deter this behaviour. "Keeping in mind the communal harmony among Goans, it is the responsibility of the government to act immediately," he said.
Residents from Benaulim constituency also staged a protest at Colva, demanding Velingkar’s arrest.
