PANJIM: With Artificial Intelligence being discussed and used in all sectors, class IX students will have an opportunity to learn the subject from the current academic year. Goa Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary has decided to include AI as an optional subject from the current academic year that begins from Monday.

Goa Board’s general body meeting was held on Wednesday. Chairman Bhagirath Shetye while speaking to Herald confirmed about the Board’s decision to include AI as an optional subject.  'Intelligence' is the only word that distinguishes human beings from other living beings in the entire universe. Humans have conquered the world through the strength of intelligence, intellectual ability, predictive ability, reasoning and analysis. Computers with AI have begun to compete with humans itself. The Board, with the intention of introducing the new technology to students, has decided to include the subject at the school level.

Speaking to Herald, Shetye said that class X exams to be held in March 2024 will have AI as a subject. Arrangements are being made for selected 50 schools, i.e. 500 students will be able to answer the subject. The state has more than 400 schools with Computer teachers and Computer labs. These schools can include AI as a subject in their curriculum. The Central Board has prepared the syllabus for the subject. With necessary changes according to local requirements, a comprehensive syllabus has been prepared. The class IX text book for AI would be made available within the next 15 days.

Two years ago, the board introduced astronomy as an academic subject for class IX and X. Students could choose it as an optional subject. Despite having to come to school late in the evening for this subject there has been a great response from students and parents. Hence, the Board has decided to include AI as an academic subject from this year.
