PANJIM: The 249th birth anniversary of Dr Bernardo Peres de Silva (BPS), the only Goan who held office as the Goa governor, during the Portuguese regime, was observed at Neura.

Tributes were paid to the bust of BPS at the Government Primary School, Neura. The event was organised in collaboration with Neura Village Panchayat and Heritage Connect Trust. Neura sarpanch Adv Honorina Araujo, deputy sarpanch Manisha Naik, Heritage Connect co-founder Prasad Sawant, primary school teacher Ankita Naik and other dignitaries were present.

Dr Bernardo Peres D'Silva was the only Goan to hold the prestigious post of Goa governor, during Portuguese rule, but also epitomised resilience, leadership and commitment to justice. His contribution to the history of Goa, his path for self-governance and his vision for the prosperity of Goans have left a lasting impact on our society and the state, said sarpanch Adv Araujo.

“As we honour his memory today, let us be inspired by his dedication to serve the people, fight for their rights and uplift our society. His life reminds us that leadership is not just a position, but a responsibility to act for the benefit of those we serve.” Adv Araujo added.

Speaking on this occasion, Heritage Connect Trust co-founder Prasad Sawant, said that Dr Bernardo Peres Da Silva was a great Goan. He was born in Neura, but today he is forgotten. Birth anniversary of BPS should be celebrated at state level. This demand has been made by the Heritage Connect Trust and there is a need for the government to fulfil this and preserve the legacy of BPS.
