VASCO: The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has gained recognition by being listed as an incentive provider on the global Environment Ship Index (ESI) portal, acknowledged by the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH).

Mormugao Port is the first port in the country to introduce Green Ship Incentives by offering discounts on port charges based on ESI scores, rewarding ships with higher environmental performance.

The incentive scheme, named ‘Harit Shrey’, was launched in October 2023. The programme offers discounts on port charges based on the ESI scores of commercial vessels, encouraging ships to reduce their emissions and comply with international environmental standards. Vessels with higher ESI scores benefit from greater discounts, driving the adoption of greener shipping practices, it was informed.

The Secretary General of IAPH had praised Mormugao Port in August 2024 for its proactive approach to the ESI programme and for raising awareness about green shipping in the region. This recognition is especially noteworthy as the Mormugao Port was one of three ports in Asia alongside Japan and Oman to offer such incentives.

Since the launch of ‘Harit Shrey’, numerous vessels had benefited from the scheme, which rewards ships that emit lower levels of Greenhouse gases.

The initiative supports international maritime goals aimed at reducing air emissions and is part of MPA’s broader strategy for sustainability in maritime operations.

The port has also submitted the scheme for the IAPH Sustainability Awards.

further demonstrating its leadership in environmental stewardship.
