MARGAO: In honour of the upcoming death anniversary of the esteemed Parliamentarian Dr Francisco Luis Gomes, a group of dedicated citizens has taken the initiative to install two directional sign boards guiding visitors to the Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes District Library at Colmorod, Margao.

This gesture enhances access to the library, ensuring that more people can engage with the valuable resources it offers.

Speaking to reporters, former Margao chairperson Savio Coutinho, who facilitated the installation of the directional signboards, shared that the Senior Librarian of the District Library, Raksha Gaunkar, had expressed a strong need for clearer signage. Many students and visitors had reported difficulties finding the library due to a lack of proper directions.

Coutinho added, "In light of the upcoming commemoration of the death anniversary of Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes on September 30, we decided to install the signboards for public convenience."

He said that another significant aspiration is to save and restore the original house of Dr Francisco Luis Gomes. "We hope the government will take appropriate measures to preserve this important historical site," he said. According to him, restoring the house would not only honour Dr Gomes’ legacy but also serve as a valuable cultural and educational resource for future generations.

Zacarias Goes noted that Dr Francisco Luis Gomes and his family contributed significantly to Navelim, a fact that is often overlooked.

He highlighted that the land for Rosary High School was donated by Dr Gomes’ family, which now serves thousands of students.

He also mentioned that the District Library was a project initiated by former Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro.

Local resident Maria Celia Diniz, who lives near the library, shared that she frequently receives visitors asking for directions to the District Library.

"With the installation of the signboards, this problem is now resolved," she said, expressing her satisfaction with the initiative.
