PONDA: To reduce accidents and raise awareness about road safety, the Ponda Traffic Cell officials will attend gram sabhas to educate locals on safety measures and the importance of following traffic rules.

Ponda Traffic Cell PI Krishna Sinhari said traffic officials held a meeting with members of panchayats in the taluka on Tuesday.

He said that the main causes of accidents are rash driving, not wearing helmets, driving under the influence of alcohol, and ignoring traffic signs.

The PI said the traffic officials are manning the highways and issuing challans to violators, but due to limited staff, traffic police cannot be deployed on internal roads, so panchayat bodies are requested to spread awareness as they have well connected with the locals.

Sinhari said that the Traffic Cell officials also visit schools and industries to create awareness of traffic rules.

The PI said, “The youth ride their two-wheelers fearlessly, without helmet, leading to fatal accidents in the villages and recently, five accidents were reported. Now, we are focussing on creating awareness among village youth through panch members, sarpanch and gram sabhas.”
