PANJIM: It is rather quaint that many betting syndicates are setting up shops in private rented bungalows in Goa. So the Monday raid by Porvorim police on a betting syndicate accepting bets in cricket, that too when no major tournaments are going on, bamboozles observers. Porvorim Police have arrested five persons for carrying out illegal cricket betting activities in a bungalow at Salvador do Mundo.
Police Inspector Rahul Parab disclosed that based on reliable information there was illegal cricket betting activities at Salvador do Mundo, Bardez, they decided to crack down on it. Porvorim Police formed a team to raided the bungalow at Saloi, and did so on Monday night.
Various articles such as mobile phones and laptops, Wi-Fi routers worth Rs 1,70,000 were seized by the police. They were arrested under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act.
The raiding team was supervised by SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe, PI Rahul Parab and consisted of constables Mahadev Naik, Tushar Raut, Nitesh Gawde. Further investigation is in progress under the supervision of SP North Akshat Kaushal, IPS.
