PONDA: While the overall conviction rate in India is a dismal 57 percent, it is even lower in Goa, Superintendent of Police (SP) Crime, Goa Police, Rahul Gupta said here on Thursday.

He was speaking at the inaugural programme of a three-day workshop on ‘Crime scene management in view of the three new criminal laws’ for the Goa Police from May 30 to June 1, in its campus at Curti-Ponda.

Addressing the police officials attending the workshop, SP (Crime) Gupta further said that police officials need to improve conviction rate.

He further informed that financial frauds amounting to Rs 5,700 crore (Rs 57 billion) is reported in the country, with many people losing money. Nearly 1.5 million complaints are related to cyber crime alone.

“When crimes like murder, robbery, and financial fraud take place, not just the victim, but the entire family gets adversely affected. The police should be passionate about giving justice to the aggrieved. It has to collect evidence from the crime scene in a professional manner. They should feel the pain and agony of victims of crimes and affected families. If the police are unable to give justice, then who will?” the senior police officer said.

Gupta also highlighted the change in crime scene management, the importance of forensic experts at the scene and opined how NFSU Goa could provide support to Goa Police.
