MAPUSA: Even as manual scavenging has been banned by law, 28-year-old sanitation worker Yamanappa Madar lost his life due to suffocation after falling inside a septic tank in Ektanagar, Mapusa. The incident occurred earlier Friday. Although the Mapusa Fire Services and Emergency Services (FES) rushed to the spot but despite the valiant efforts of the FES team, Yamanappa Madar succumbed to suffocation before he could be rescued.
Madar’s body was recovered by the Mapusa Fire Services and Emergency Services.
Yamanappa Madar, a dedicated sanitation worker, was engaged in routine maintenance duties when the tragic accident unfolded. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest that he fell into the septic tank, leading to suffocation.
The Mapusa fire service stated that they received a call at 9am and the entire tedious operation of retrieving the body from the narrow opening of the septic tank could only be completed by 2.55pm. Dnyaneshwar Sawant, sub officer, Premanand Kambli, driver operator, Girish Gawas, fire fighter, Ashok Volvoikar, fire fighter, Vishnu Naik, fire fighter and Sakharam Gaonkar, recruit fire fighter were involved in the operation.
