MARGAO: The Sonsodo waste dump is an age-old menace which eludes solution by the Margao Municipality. Crores of rupees have been spent in consultancy and finding various solutions to the soaring problem. However, no permanent and comprehensive solution has been found by various governments and various councils of the Margao Municipality, which led Herald TV to ask people the question “Is Waste Management work only a money making exercise in Margao Municipality?”
Sonsodo is a milking cow. There is nothing good happening there. The court had directed them to do proper work, but they are not acting. There is total mismanagement by the Margao Municipality. If we analyse the politics, somebody is making money out of this. There is lot of corruption in this. Basic facilities which they should have provided to the people in managing the dry waste since all the wet waste goes to Cacora. Seventy tons of dry waste is collected daily out of which 10 tons goes to Cacora. If they cannot handle 60 tonnes of waste then the councillors should resign. ROQUE MASCARENHAS, Citizens for Sonsodo
We are talking about Sonsodo for so many years. Now they talk of segregation of wet and dry waste. But most of the waste is sent to Cacora. Lakhs of rupees are spent on transportation. They also spend money on segregation and collections. It appears that all this is being done for money only. The Municipality officials or the elected councillors don’t appear to work with dedication. We have seen Margao go from bad to worse, by this councillors. Corruption is the biggest issue here. In future people of Margao will have to think carefully while electing their councillors.

Today the MMC is fooling everyone in the name of solid waste management. When we do the cleaning of the ward by putting labourers. We collect a lot of dirt such as grass, dry leaves etc. But we cannot dispose it off at Sonsodo, since the workers say they have been told not to bring any waste to Sonsodo. They say that the High Court is monitoring, or they give some other strange excuses. Hence I had asked the Solid Waste Management Minister Atanasio Monserrate whether this comes within his scope of work. Or everything that goes into garbage collection and management comes within your scope of work. Or is it that you only ask us to segregate the waste and then dump it somewhere.
