Undertrial on road to recovery at GMC

MAPUSA: The condition of the undertrial Raju Das, who attempted suicide by self-immolation in the dispensary of the Central jail, Colvale, was stated to be improving.

“The condition of Das, who is admitted in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim is improving. He had less than 40 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment in the medicine ward of GMC,” informed police.

The Colvale police has also recorded his statement. The incident occurred on October 9 when Das who was working in dispensary suddenly bolted the door and set himself afire. It is suspected that he used senitiser.

The Colva police had arrested Das for alleged sexual assault and under the relevant Sections of POCSO Act.

Meanwhile, the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has issued suo motu notices to the North Goa District Magistrate and the Inspector General of Prisons in connection with self-immolation attempt by the undertrial of the Central jail, Colvale. Both, the North Goa Collector and the IG (Prisons) have been asked to inquire into the matter and to submit their replies on or before December 10.
