PERNEM: Due to the heavy rains, water and mud from below the tracks surfaced in the railway tunnel ahead of the Malpem- Pernem Railway station on Tuesday afternoon. Although the same was cleared and train services were restored, the problem recurred at Tuesday night due to heavy rains.

Rail services were thrown out of gear and seven trains were cancelled. Work was on, through the whole of Wednesday to remove the mud and water.  About 150 labourers were employed by the Konkan Railway in the tunnel to remove the debris.

Meanwhile, Konkan railway ran the trains from Mumbai to Sawantwadi. From Sawantwadi rail passengers were ferried to Tivim by bus for their onwards journey by train. There was hope of train services resuming by Thursday.
