PANJIM: The Karuna Football Foundation in collaboration with GVM’s GGPR College of Commerce, Ponda, and The Light by the Sea from Australia organised a three-day advanced and another two-day basic surfboard training event, at the Bogmolo Beach, recently.

The training event was conducted by a team from Sydney, Australia, with facilitators, including Richard (Richo) and Jacob Hadges, who had visited Goa last year for the first time to introduce the sport towards community transformation.

The participants mainly Directors of Physical Education and Teaching staff from the colleges across Goa included former Director of Sports of Goa University Milton Fernandes, Dr Michael Dias of Dempo College, Dr Sam Braganza from Government College, Pernem; Joanita from the Goa Medical College and others.

The advanced training was limited to participants who had completed their basic training last year including Betty D’Silva, Filbert Pereira, Earl, Valucio Rodrigues, Mathias Fernandes and others to ensure that they are now trainers for the new generation of learners and who have been working in the field.

Throughout the last year, the advanced group had monthly meetings on Zoom with the Australian team to update themselves to learn more about the science of the ocean and also keep the world recognised trainers know regarding the regular progress done by their mentee surfers.

Prof Dr Teotone Vaz, principal of GVM’s GGPR College, Ponda, who had attended the training last year also refreshed some of the skills and was actively involved in the training programme. The Australian team is also planning to have a South Asia Surfers conference and highly advanced clinic next year in Goa in collaboration with the foundation.

Ishan Gaikwad from Nagpur took on the role of coordination under the guidance of the Karuna Football Foundation.
