PANJIM: 'Moga', the mascot for the National Games to be held in Goa in October-November, was launched at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium, Taleigao on Sunday.
An Indian bison, 'Moga' denotes the determination to overcome challenges. It also means the love athletes show for their sport. It was launched in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Sports Minister Govind Gaude, Union Minister of State for Tourism and Ports Shripad Naik, President of IOA PT Usha, international boxer Mary Kom, Bholo Nath Singh, Secretary General, Hockey India among other dignitaries.
Mary Kom said: “With 50,000 attendees, Goa will be a sports hub. It will be known for its sun, sand and sports. It is a big task to hold 43 events in Goa. I am sure it will be done very well.”
The Chief Minister said he was happy the launch took place on Goa’s Revolution Day and he was sure the Games would bring about a revolution in the sporting culture of the State. He hoped there would be more high achievers like Arjuna awardees Bhakti Kulkarni and Brahmanand Sankhwalkar.
The jersey for the Goan contingent was also released on the occasion. P T Usha expressed her confidence that several new records will be set during the Games.
The event was marked by musical performances and folk dances by Goan artistes.
