In a stern response to the recent incident at Camurlim Primary School, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the teacher responsible for brutally beating a class IV student will be suspended and may face arrest if deemed necessary by law enforcement.

The incident, which has sparked outrage across the state, involved a 9-year-old boy who was severely beaten with a steel ruler by his teacher, leaving him bruised and bleeding after two pages were torn from his book.

CM emphasized that

such acts of violence in schools are on the rise and will not be tolerated. "We will take strict action against those who abuse their position as educators," Sawant stated. He also mentioned that the Colvale Police have already registered a case against the teacher, who appeared at the police station on Wednesday for questioning. Despite being confronted by the media, the teacher refused to answer any questions.

The teacher will initially be suspended by the education department, followed by further actions as required. It is alarming to witness such incidents, especially with three recent cases suggesting that some teachers may be projecting their personal frustrations onto students. This behavior is unacceptable, and I believe these individuals may need counseling. Such conduct will not be tolerated

Outrage Erupts as Teacher Assaults 9-Year-Old Student with Steel Ruler

The assault has caused widespread concern and anger among parents and social workers, who are demanding the immediate arrest and dismissal of the teacher. Social workers have highlighted that corporal punishment is illegal in India, and any violation is a serious offense. Some parents have also expressed concerns about the current recruitment practices for teachers, suggesting that the system needs to be more stringent.

Corporal punishment has been banned in India since 2000, yet here we are in 2024, still dealing with such incidents. A teacher is not the master of a student but rather a guide in their education. The brutality with which that teacher assaulted a 9-year-old student raises serious concerns about her mental state. Such behavior can lead to violence among students. This teacher should be removed from her position immediately

Every student is protected under the Child Rights Act, and even parents are not permitted to physically punish their children. It is outrageous that the teacher in question beat the student so brutally, like an animal. This suggests either a mental imbalance or that the teacher is unfit for the profession. Teachers are supposed to shape the future of students, not harm them

Viresh Naik

Whether in primary schools or any other educational institution, no teacher has the legal right to punish students in any manner. If a teacher does so, it is a grave mistake. Children’s cognitive abilities are not fully developed, and teachers should understand this and act accordingly

As the investigation continues, CM Sawant reassured that the government will not only take action against the accused teacher but will also provide counseling to educators to prevent such incidents in the future. "This is a matter of grave concern," he said, acknowledging the growing number of cases involving the physical abuse of students.

The situation remains tense, with calls for justice echoing across the state, as authorities work to address the alarming issue of violence in schools.
